What do you do when you are blindsided in business? Three weeks ago I would have said I could answer this and then last week (14-22 July 2018) happened. I was completely thrown in my life and my business, I won’t go into the specific details of what happened but let me say it was a week from hell.
I guess it wasn’t all bad.
It had its highs…I directed two awesome (even if I do say so myself) performances but it was predominantly a week spent leaning on everyone around me. Facing some serious fears and having my world completely flipped around – for others close to me they had an even tougher week. It really was a week that none of us saw coming. (Don’t panic – no one died)
This wasn’t even in my business life – it was my personal life. However as many of you will be aware the line between can become hazy at times. As I have discussed in past posts anxiety is a beast when you run a business – one that I have no doubt could end your company if you allowed it to.
So why am I writing this?
I guess more than anything for cathartic reasons and simply to tell you – you can not be superhuman. You maybe the owner of a business – you maybe peoples “go to” person. The one calling all of the shots – but at the end of the day you are only human. Like everyone else in the world you have plates to spin and a life to run. Things happen. Life happens. It’s okay.
I took last week as a write off, don’t get me wrong I felt really guilty by Friday about how little energy I had put into my business and into my communities. It felt awful to not have responded to messages and emails. It’s easy to take these bad weeks and feel like you have lost the game completely, that you have hit a low that your business will not recover from. This is soooo (I can’t even put enough “O’s”) not true.
As my wonderful Coach Clare Farthing says, “YOU are your business”. So take care of you first. Take care of your life. Take away that guilt and most of all – Be kind to yourself.
So for anyone out there who is having a shocker of a day/week/month – its okay. As my sister and friends spent a great deal of time last week telling me – nothing is permanent, everything is ever changing, you, your life, your business so ride the storm (or storms – there maybe many) but keep looking for the sun because I guarantee it will be there and it will return.
Here’s to a brighter August.
